ITC HOLDINGS CORP. - INVESTING IN GREEN ENERGY TRANSMISSION
Written by: Predrag Jevtovicon January 21, 2010

ITC Holdings Corp. (ITC) is Michigan based holdings company envolved in the business of investing in electricity transmission infrastructure. The company developes and expands high -voltage electricity transmission systems mainteining safety, improving reliability, reducing systems losses and releiving congestions. Till now, ITC has invested about 900 million US$ in the electricity transmission grid, replacing aging transmission facilities and equipment in the States of Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

ITC Holdings Corp. was established in 2003 lounching its subsidary company ITC Transmission, the first US independent electricity transmission company. Nowadays, ITC Holdings Corp. counts with three subsidary companies: ITC Transmission, Michigan Electric Transmission Compnay (METC) and ITC Midwest including ITC Great Plains and ITC Grid Development.

ITC Holdings Corp. is the largest independent electricity transmission company in U.S. being specialized in so called "smart-grid" technology. This technology has a big future in the modern world and it is often described as "transmission superhighway". Classical electrical grid is a conglomerate of networks and power generation companies with multiple operators employing variety of levels of coordination and communication. Nowadays, major part of coordination and comunication is manually controlled. There is significant growth in renewable energy resources and a lots of companies and homes begin generating more “green” electricity as solar and wind, enabling them to sell surplus energy back to their utilities. To encrease energy consumption eficiency it is needed to modernize both, the transmission and distribution grids. In other words, it is needed to create smart grids to increase the connectivity, automation and coordination between suppliers, consumers and long distance transmisson networks and local distribution networks. Smart grids make possible greater competition between providers and increase use of variable energy sources. The use of market mechanisms on the electricity market results in improved access to markets, lower cost of delivered energy and in drive energy conservation. Smart-grids are essential for renewable energy because most renewable energy sources are intermittent in nature, depending on natural phenomena such as the sun and the wind. If electricity prices are increased exactly when the desired natural phenomena are not present, consumers will decrease consumption. All this can be achieved and controled by means of the smart-gris technology.

On April 10, 2009, ITC Holdings Corp. obtained government approval for transmission infrastructure investment for a proposed 3,000-mile Midwest regional "green power superhighway”. Federal Energy Regulatory Comission (FERC) aproved to ITC a project of the new transmission grid to deliver wind-power renewable energy from Midwest to the cities of Chicago, Minneapolis and others cities and regions (http://www.ferc.gov/news/news-releases/2009/2009-2/04-13-09.asp) For this project ITC Holdings Corp. designed limited partnership named Green Power Express LP. The goals are to build new transmission infrastructure and provide high voltage electricity transmission from remote renewable energy sources in Iowa, Minnesota and Dakotas to Midwestern centers in Chicago, Minneapolis and southeastern Wisconsin, to improve regional electric markets and to decrease existing congestion on regional transmission facilities. Energy is allready generating by powerful state-of-art wind turbines built by General Electric, AES and Siemens. Important share of these wind generation capacities belongs to ITC Midwest itself. The new infrastructure will deliver efficiently up to 12,000 megawatts of clean, renawable energy from remoted areas where it is produced to areas with major power consumption.

Till now, ITC Holdings Corp. has upgraded more then 15,000 miles of U.S. electrical lines with its smart-grid technology. During the last year ITC Midwest LLC connected 716 MW of installed wind energy generation to the existing company's electric transmission grid. Result are a booming profits and continuious and strong expansion. ITC Holdings Corp. is still a relatively small company with 2,65B US$ market capitalization but its business model is very well concepted and has a bright future. It is excellent opportunity to invest in green energy transmission in its early days of existance.
