Rupee Gets a Symbol

India’s rupee is now in an exclusive club – it joins Japan, Britain, the European Union and the U.S. as the only currencies to have globally recognized symbols.

The new symbol, shown in the picture, came out of a contest held by the Indian government that attracted more than 3,000 entries. A student at the Indian Institute of Technology was the winner.

The government also hopes the symbol will set it apart from other countries with currencies of the same name, among them Pakistan, Nepal, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

The rupee symbol combines ancient Hindi.....

Pay-off in getting slice of huge vegetarian pie
NEW YORK: If anything, the just concluded New York Fancy Food Show (NYFFS) would appear to highlight a rising trend in the US towards vegetarianism and veganism, or, as some like to call it, "nature-based foods". At the three-day NYFFS that took off on June 27, there was an increase in the number of US and foreign companies offering vegetarian food products ranging from fresh and frozen foods to ready-to-eat products such as cookies and crackers made from vegetable fats. With good response like this, in time we may even look at increasing the flight frequency to a daily operation," he told Business Times in an interview recently. The idea of opening up a route to Kuala Lumpur came about after it was learnt that many Omanis were travelling to the city.....
