Pakistan Must Prove It's Still A Reliable Ally
Topics:USA, Pakistan
In the almost nine years the United States has been fighting in Afghanistan, any thoughtful person who follows the war has had a recurring worry: Can America rely on Pakistan? Can our allies in that turbulent country close the Taliban's safe havens along the border? And, for that matter, are the Pakistanis really trying? The massive disclosure of war-related documents this week by WikiLeaks raised a number of questions, but none more important

FTA with New Zealand in force tomorrow
MALAYSIA'S free trade agreement with New Zealand will come into force tomorrow, enabling Malaysians to extend their products and services to the Oceanic region. International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said the bilateral agreement will add value to the Asean-Australia-New Zealand FTA which came into force from January 1 this year. "Under this agreement, there will be a faster elimination of import duties from 2020 (under the regional FTA) to 2016 (under the bilateral FTA). Malaysian consumers will also gain from the faster elimination," he said at a media briefing yesterday. It will provide better market access for Malaysia's exporters as import duties on all Malaysia's export products including electrical and electronic products, textiles and apparel and auto.....

Oil and Gas Industry Feeding the Deal Rumor Mill
Research Recap submits:

The oil & gas industry was one of the leading feeders of the deal rumor mill during the first half of the year, based on an Alacra Deal Pulse analysis of traditional and alternative news sources. There were 32 deal rumors during the period. How much of that was due to BP (BP)?

The fallout from the Gulf oil spill did spur a surge in rumors involving BP. Prior to the disaster, there was only one deal rumor concerning BP since the start of the year, and that was an acquisition by the then-expansionary company. Since the spill there have been at least 9.....

Palm futures steadier on supply concerns
CPO FUTURES PRICES of crude palm oil (CPO) futures contracts on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives ended higher yesterday on the back of steady crude oil price, dealers said. Concerns on a shortage of supply due to the rainy season and price rise in commodities generally were also among contributing factors to the positive trend, a dealer said. "The market should remain steady as festival period buying remains strong with demand coming from China, India, Pakistan and Indonesia," the dealer said. At close, CPO futures contracts for August 2010 and September 2010 rose RM14 each to close at RM2,585 and RM2,542 a tonne respectively, while October 2010 and November 2010 both were RM19 higher at RM2,514 and RM2,506 a tonne respectively. RUBBER MALAYSIAN rubber prices closed higher yesterday supported by firmer futures prices on the Tokyo.....

BP hires HSBC for sale of stake in Viet gas project
HONG KONG/LONDON: BP has tapped HSBC to sell its stake in the Nam Con Son gas project in Vietnam, as it scrambles to hive off US$30 billion (US$1 = RM3.20) of assets to pay for the clean-up of the worst oil spill in US history, three sources said. The British oil giant, which is on a campaign to sell a host of assets from Pakistan to Egypt, said last week it is seeking a buyer for its stake in the Nam Con Son gas project offshore southern Ho Chi Minh City, worth US$966 million by one estimate. India's state-run explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corp and Petrovietnam - both partners with BP in the Nam Con Son project - are expected to
